Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year learning certificate program in theological education based on small-group study and practice. The program is designed and administered by the University of the South at Sewanee School of Theology. It is intended to offer theological education and formation for laypeople by providing an opportunity for individuals to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith, explore their own spiritual journey, and develop skills for ministry within their communities. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 120,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian Service.
Through the weekly meetings, reading assignments, and theological discussions, individuals are able to deepen their understanding of Scripture, theology, and the history of the Christian tradition. Though the certificate takes four years to earn, commitments to the program are made on a yearly basis.
The goal is to think theologically through the development of skills in Theological Reflection (TR). By examining our own beliefs and their relationship to our culture and the tradition of our Christian faith, participants can learn what it means to be effective ministers in the world. In coming to terms with the notion that everything we do has potential for manifesting the love of Christ, we discover that our ministry is at hand wherever we turn.
Class Details
EfM is a four-year certificate program in which adult learners (18+) commit to classes one year at a time.
Curriculum progresses as follows:
Year 1 studies the Hebrew Scriptures.
Year 2 covers the Gospels, and the New Testament.
Year 3 looks at Church History.
Year 4 explores theology and developing and enhancing the learner’s own practice.
All years will also have interlude readings to enhance the learning experience.
Although the academic readings are important, the program also incorporates prayer, class discussion, and TR in helping each learner to discern their role in their personal Ministry.
Class size is 6 to 12 learners.
The class is administered and led by a trained Mentor (Don Stine).
Enrollment is done on a “first-come-first-serve basis." Enrollment requests can be made immediately by contacting Don Stine (see phone number in the Parish Directory).
