Experience the Magic of A CHRISTMAS MEMORY

For the sixth consecutive season, actor and theologian Dr. E.R. Haire, Jr. will once again grace the stage at St. John in the Wilderness with his moving one-man performance of Truman Capote’s heartwarming story, A Christmas Memory. This annual tradition has become a beloved event for the Flat Rock community and beyond, offering a nostalgic escape into the tender, bittersweet memories of Capote’s early years.

The performances will take place in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House, located at 1905 Greenville Highway, Flat Rock—just across from the historic Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness.


Dr. Haire, reflecting on his upcoming performances, expressed gratitude for the support he’s received throughout the years. "It is once again an honor to bring this classic story to life. I am grateful to the good people of St. John in the Wilderness and the greater Flat Rock community and beyond who have supported my efforts," he shared. "As I enter my sixth year of performing this wonderful, heartfelt story, I look forward to sharing it with new and returning audiences."

About the Story

Set during the Great Depression, A Christmas Memory recounts Capote’s childhood experiences living with elderly relatives in rural Alabama, particularly his touching friendship with his cousin, Miss Sook Faulk. This timeless tale of love, tradition, and the simple joys of life continues to resonate with audiences, reminding us of the power of connection and memory.


Capote's narrative was first published in the late 1950s and has since become one of his most cherished works, alongside Breakfast at Tiffany’s, In Cold Blood, and The Grass Harp. His rich storytelling and unique ability to capture the essence of Southern life make this performance a must-see.


About Dr. E.R. Haire, Jr.

Earle Ross (E.R.) Haire, Jr., PhD, brings a wealth of experience to his role. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Haire's impressive career bridges acting and theology. His acting credits span from his time in Los Angeles, where he performed in productions like The Foreigner, Hamlet, and The Importance of Being Earnest, to his theological studies at Yale University Divinity School and the University of Edinburgh, where he earned a PhD in Theology and Ethics.


His unique blend of talent, passion, and reverence for Capote’s work ensures that A Christmas Memory remains an unforgettable experience.
