Lent is just around the corner, but first we must feast! Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the Germanic-Old English word "shrive," meaning absolve. Because the day comes right before Lent, a season of fasting and penitence, early Christians would use Shrove Tuesday as an opportunity to go be "shriven" by their confessor.
Today, Shrove Tuesday is more associated with indulgence: the need to use up rich ingredients like butter, milk, sugar, and eggs before the 40-day fast gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on on this day.
This year, St. John will host a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, March 4, at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall. In addition to pancakes, the Chefs of St. John will serve up sausage and applesauce. Beverages and dessert will also be provided. See you there!
